Makia's Story

Makia Metzger has lived in Cobb county for over 30 years.  Makia and Britt, her husband, are both proud parents of two sons, Will (15) and Eli (10).  Makia and her husband have made Powder Springs their home for 25 years.

Makia was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa, and migrated to the United States with her family shortly before the ten-year-long civil war causing her to stay in the United States and become a naturalized citizen.  Makia graduated from Campbell High School, and went on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts degree.  She graduated at the top 5% of her class, achieving honors summa cum laude from Georgia State University, majoring in Political Science and minoring in English.

She went on to complete her Juris Doctorate from the University of Georgia School of Law. Prior to embarking on her legal career, Makia interned at the Athens Legal Aid Clinic. In her prosecutorial career spanning over two metropolitan Atlanta counties and 15 years, she is convinced that mass incarceration is not only expensive on taxpayers but a gateway to helping wayward low-level offenders become better, more violent criminals.

As the only candidate for Solicitor General to have working knowledge prosecuting both felonies and misdemeanors, Makia has witnessed the pressure of court case backlogs on  prosecutors, often contributing to weak investigation efforts.  However, she understands that quick decisions without deeper questions betray both victims and those accused of committing crimes.  Makia is thus committed to seeking out the truth through thorough, organized investigations. She is a longtime proponent for the creation of strong community partnerships with regional rehabilitative programs -- providing real solutions to repentant offenders, which better help sustain healthy communities while deterring crime.
